Pintester Movement: Hair and Sharpie mugs

Wooo! It's time for the Pintester Movement again!!

Yes, I got that excited about it. Hush, you.

I found my pin, then decided that since it was a hair-test and this is a craft blog... I figured I should probably do a craft test as well.

Curls and a Sharpie mug

Now, as a girl with long and reasonably straight hair, I'm always looking for an easy way to curl my hair- I've tried the rag-roll method (and woke up looking like a young Hermione Granger. The facial expression below is highly accurate to my feelings that morning...)

Not to mention salt spray and french braiding overnight... Yeah. So I tried this one:

I tried it! Here's fuzzy proof:

As it turns out, trying to take a photo of the back of your head is harder than I thought...

Went to bed, tried to go to sleep, and half an hour later I got up and pulled them out. So damn uncomfortable. So never again. (I'm not joking. I swapped from bobby pins to hairbands and everything and it was still awful...

And moving on to my "Sharpie" mug. A Sharpie mug which didn't actually use Sharpies because I couldn't find them, so in the spirit of Pintesting, I used Bic permanent markers.

Here, have a before/after baking (and dishwashing) pic

Before after baking

So... Pin-win? I'm going to try it again just for fun later on, to see if I can experiment and get my colour to stay...
OH. I baked it for half an hour at 220C (I stuck the mug in while the oven was heating up), then it was coming off, so I traced over the vines again (hence why they're still dark green) and stuck it back in the oven for 50mins at 220C.

Have you tried these Pins before? Let me know how they turned out!!
Catch you next time,

  1. First I have to say, what is up with the girls face in hair pin curl pictures? Is anyone else slightly thrown off by her open mouth.

Anyway, back to the pin-tests. I have both of these pins on my boards. Good to know that the sharper color can change/come off during baking....I may have to rethink that one.

    Have a great day.

    1. Haha, I hadn't noticed just how ...odd... the open mouth was until you pointed it out =P
I was surprised how much the colours came off! It was definitely unexpected.

Hope you're having a great day too :)

    2. It's like she's trying to look sexy while her head looks like a giant medusa-hair tumor.
I wonder if there is some chemical difference between Sharpies and other marker that makes it work better?

  2. I have a dozen white mugs that my SIL sent when my husband moved out here so I've been wanting to try this for some time. I'm a little sad the color doesn't stay!

    Good try :)

I was a bit surprised/sad when the colour didn't stay, and out of curiosity I'll be trying it again soon, haha.

  3. I hear the mug one is always a fail, as a general rule. Oh well, it's a cute idea anyway! I did a food pin for my contribution :)

    1. It is an adorable idea, pity it doesn't work that well lol. Oooh I'll pop over to your blog and have a look! Food pins are always interesting :D

  4. Haha! Sorry the curls didn't work. Similar things happen to me when I try the ones you have to sleep on. There's no good way to do it! Sad about the mugs, but I think that whole Sharpie thing is a myth. I've heard they sell porcelain pens that actually DO work... Maybe I'll try it sometime. ;)

    1. Oh, I'm so glad that I'm not the only person that these curls don't work on, haha.
I've heard of those porcelain pens! Wonder where I can get one... =P

  5. I tried the curls before and my hair just became a frizzy, crimpy mess. Was just a terrible experience.

  6. I tried this one last year and mine came right off in the dishwasher. Boo! I just haven't had the ambition to actually go buy porcelain paint pens. Cute designs though. Double points for the elvish (sp?)
And curling hair like that works for so few people. You really have to have just the right texture hair and a high pain tolerance to sleep on bobby pins.

    1. Oh no! I was apprehensive to put it in the dishwasher, but then went "ahh why not". Yep, that's elvish! Couldn't resist the opportunity to have a mug with the "One Ring" inscription on it, haha.
Ahh it all makes sense now, think I'll stick to my curling iron =P

  8. I'm very impressed with your Black Speech script, and always up for Harry Potter references.

I am also amused by how... excited... the woman in the hair picture looks. She must really get off on having poor sleep and head pain. =P

    1. It's actually from Lord of the Rings! (It's the inscription from the One Ring =) ) Thank you though! I'm surprised how well that actually turned out lol

Haha that's the best explanation for those facial expressions I've heard XD

    2. Yup, Black Speech is the language of Sauron. It is often confused with Elvish, which is more square.

  9. I have never had good luck with any hair pins. At least you didn't have to spray anything gross on your hair. I tried a salt spray one for my blog and it was gross.

    1. Eww that does sound gross! I'll pop over and check out your pin =D

  10. I don't think any standard marker is going to stand up to an oven; though I never would have guessed the blue would have turned brown, so, new thing learned!

    1. It was a huge surprise to see how the colour changed! I was hoping that it'd stay at least reasonably close to the same colour, but apparently not lol.

  11. I have a ton curls you can have. In high school, I used to wear curlers to bed at night to relax the curl. Not sure I can do that anymore. Loved the colored writing mug...sorry the color didn't stay.

    1. Oh wow, sleeping in curlers must have been so uncomfortable!
      Thanks so much =)

  12. That hair pin just looks painful. How in the world are you supposed to sleep like that?! Also, Cherin is totally correct - that girl's facial expression is bizarre. I'm bummed that the mug one didn't work. I've considered trying it but haven't gotten around to it yet. I branched out from my normal craft pinterest attempts and tried a recipe this time - if you're a fan of salted caramel dark chocolate cookies, you should check it out. They turned out *delicious*.

    1. ...I don't know how you're supposed to sleep like that- no matter which way I turned it was ...stabby and uncomfortable, haha.
Ooooh salted caramel dark chocolate cookies? They sound *delicious* (ah how I love salted caramel...)

  13. Apparently the issue with the mugs is that ordinary Sharpies just don't work anyway - you need the special ones for ceramics (which no one bothers to mention in the pin). Steady hands on the design though, very cool!

    1. Wish it was mentioned in the pin (that would've been awesome!) but oh well, things you learn while Pintesting.
Thanks! I wish I could take full credit, but my design skills are all complements of tracing lol.

  14. Oh man, I totally feel you on that whole have-straight-hair-want-curls thing. I also find it super uncomfortable to sleep with my hair done up in any way. I've just resigned myself to having long pin-straight hair that only gets brushed when I'm not lazy

23 before 23: 6 month update!

Back in August I posted about 23 things that I wanted to achieve before I hit 23 next year (read about it here). Since we're at the 6 month mark, I thought an update was in store!

Writing this post and reading over my list I'm realising how much I've got to achieve - school holidays now, time to get busy! So far I've achieved...

12. Spend a day at the beach
Check! Was a gorgeous day and both myself and my boyfriend came back without being completely roasted. Considering how pale we both are, that was a surprise.

19. Find a signature makeup look
It only occurred to me the other day that I'd done this - I <3 my winged liner and bright lip.

20. Read 2 "classic" novels
Done and done!
Clearly I've gotten lazy with my book reviewing, haha. I've since read The Great Gatsby, Little Women and am currently marathoning my way through Anna Karenina.

I've noticed it just seems like I'm not a Jane Austen fan but have enjoyed all of the others that I've re…

Pichu Cross Stitch

My first cross stitch creation, created with KG-Chart LE.  It's a Pichu (from Pokemon), and I'm hoping to continue with this Pokemon theme through other cross stitches.  If I get around to this, I'll post a picture when I'm done =)
